Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020 (MA000009)
PaySauce automatically supports the majority of features used in the Hospitality Award for businesses operating within standard hospitality hours except for Accommodation , Casino and Gaming operators.
Some features are available now but require a more manual approach, with automation planned for future updates. These are noted throughout this article.
⚠️ If you are unsure whether your business falls within the scope of what's currently supported, review the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020 on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.
Classification levels
PaySauce supports the following Hospitality Award classifications:
Introductory Level
Level 1 through Level 6
Apprentices
⚠️ If an employee moves to a higher classification level, you will need to update this manually.
To update an employee's classification level:
Select the employee.
Go to the Award Details tab.
Select the new level from the Classification dropdown.
Select Update.
Junior pay rates
The Hospitality Award provides reduced pay rates for employees under 21. The Hospitality Award has separate junior rate scales for office employees and non-office employees, so it is important to configure this correctly.
Age | Non-Office Worker | Office Worker |
Under 17 | 50% | 45% |
17 | 60% | 55% |
18 | 70% | 65% |
19 | 80% | 75% |
20 | 90% | 90% |
21 and over | 100% of adult rate | 100% of adult rate |
Note: PaySauce calculates junior rates automatically based on the employee's date of birth and classification. Make sure you also set whether the employee is an office employee, as this affects which rate scale applies.
Office employees
Some employees under the Hospitality Award work primarily in an office environment and are subject to different junior pay rates. To configure this:
Select the employee.
Go to the Award Details tab.
Enable the Office Employee setting.
Select Update.
Penalty rates
PaySauce automatically applies the correct penalty rates based on when hours are worked.
Evening and night penalties on weekdays are paid as a flat amount per hour on top of the base rate, rather than as a percentage.
Penalty rates are not cumulative. Paysauce will make sure that the highest applicable penalty rate is pate.
When | Full-time & part-time | Casual |
Monday to Friday, 7pm to midnight | +$2.81 per hour | +$2.81 per hour |
Monday to Friday, midnight to 7am | +$4.22 per hour | +$4.22 per hour |
Saturday (all hours) | 125% | 150% |
Sunday (all hours) | 150% | 175% |
Public holiday | 225% | 250% |
To trigger public holiday rates, add the Public Holiday detail to the timesheet.
Overtime
PaySauce calculates overtime automatically based on the daily and period thresholds you configure for each employee.
Maximum daily ordinary hours
Select the arrangement that matches the employee's working pattern:
Four days at 8 hours, one day at 6 hours
Four days at 9.5 hours
Five days at 7.6 hours
Maximum of 11.5 ordinary hours per day
Any hours worked beyond the daily ordinary hours cap are classified as overtime.
Maximum period ordinary hours
Overtime also applies once an employee exceeds their ordinary hours threshold for the period. Select the appropriate threshold on the employee's settings:
38 hours per week
76 hours per fortnight
152 hours over four weeks
Overtime rates
When | Full-time & part-time | Casual |
Monday to Friday — first 2 hours of overtime | 150% | 175% |
Monday to Friday — after 2 hours of overtime | 200% | 225% |
Saturday and Sunday — all overtime hours | 200% | 225% |
Public holiday — all overtime hours | 225% | 250% |
Time off in lieu (TOIL)
Rather than paying overtime, employees can accrue TOIL. Add the Accrue TOIL detail to the timesheet and PaySauce will accrue time at the applicable overtime factor rather than paying it out.
For example, an employee who works 2 overtime hours at 150% accrues 3 hours of TOIL.
Minimum engagement
Casual employees under the Hospitality Award have a minimum engagement of 2 hours per shift. PaySauce applies this automatically for casual employees once they are configured correctly.
Allowances
Supervisor Allowance
The Supervisor Allowance is payable to employees who are required to supervise other staff as part of their role.
To set up the Supervisor Allowance:
Select the employee.
Go to the Award Details tab.
Tick Supervisor Allowance.
Select Update.

Are evening and night penalties paid differently from other penalty rates?
Yes. Unlike weekend and public holiday rates, which are a percentage of the base rate, Monday to Friday evening and night penalties are a flat dollar amount added on top of the base rate per hour worked in that window. PaySauce applies these automatically based on the hours recorded in the timesheet.
