Connecting PaySauce to AI

Connect PaySauce to your AI assistant via MCP

Written by Kelton Dunkley

You can connect PaySauce to AI assistants such as Claude and ask questions about your payroll in plain English. For example, you could ask:

  • "Who's on leave next week?"

  • "Which employees haven't submitted timesheets for this pay period?"

The connection uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets AI assistants securely access information in other applications.

What you can do

The PaySauce connection is read-only. Your AI assistant can look up and summarise your payroll information, but it cannot create, change, approve or delete anything, and it cannot run payroll. To make changes, use the PaySauce app as usual.

What you can see depends on your PaySauce access.

Employers and bureaus

If you manage payroll for one or more companies, you can ask about:

  • Employers: company details, and for bureaus, a list of the companies you manage

  • Employees: employee details and search by name

  • Timesheets: hours worked, filtered by employee, pay run, status or date range

  • Leave requests: including the status of each day (pending, approved or declined)

  • Leave balances: accrued, taken and available

  • Pay runs: current and past pay runs and their status, including the calculations for each employee

  • Allowances, deductions, reimbursements and additional earnings (such as bonuses)

Employees

If you're an employee, you can ask about your own:

  • Timesheets

  • Leave requests

  • Leave balances

  • Reimbursements

Example questions

For employers

  • "Who's on leave this week?"

  • "Which employees haven't submitted timesheets for the current pay period?"

  • "How much annual leave does John Smith have available?"

  • "What's the forecast cost of the current pay run?"

  • "How does the cost of the current pay period compare to the last 5 periods, and where are the variances?"

For employees

  • "How much annual leave do I have?"

  • "Show me my timesheets for last fortnight."

  • "Is my leave request for next month approved yet?"

  • "When's the next public holiday?"

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A PaySauce login

  • An AI assistant that supports remote MCP servers (sometimes called "connectors", "integrations" or "custom tools"). On some AI services this feature is only available on paid plans, or must be enabled by your organisation's administrator.

There's no API key to create. You sign in with your normal PaySauce login, and your AI assistant only ever has the same access you have in the PaySauce app.

Option 1: Install the PaySauce connector (recommended)

If your AI assistant has a connector directory or marketplace, search for PaySauce and install it from there.

1. Open your AI assistant's connector directory and search for PaySauce.

2. Select Connect (or similar).

3. You'll be taken to the PaySauce sign-in page. Sign in with your PaySauce login.

4. Approve the request to give your AI assistant access.

5. Return to your AI assistant and start asking questions.

Option 2: Add PaySauce manually

If PaySauce isn't listed in your AI assistant's directory, you can add it as a custom connector using these details:

Setting

Value

Server URL

Transport

Streamable HTTP (sometimes just labelled "HTTP")

Authentication

OAuth (your assistant will open a PaySauce sign-in)

Client ID / secret

Leave blank - these are set up automatically

The exact steps vary between AI assistants, but generally:

1. Open your AI assistant's settings and find the section for connectors, integrations or MCP servers.

2. Choose the option to add a custom connector or remote MCP server.

3. Enter a name (for example, PaySauce) and the server URL `https://api.paysauce.com/mcp`.

4. Save, then select Connect.

5. Sign in with your PaySauce login and approve access.

Some tools are set up using a configuration file instead. If yours is, the entry usually looks something like this — check your tool's documentation for its exact format:

{
"mcpServers": {
"paysauce": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.paysauce.com/mcp"
}
}
}

Note: PaySauce does not support the older SSE transport. If your AI assistant asks you to choose between SSE and HTTP, choose HTTP (Streamable HTTP).

Using the connection

Choosing a company or account.

When you first ask a question, your AI assistant checks which PaySauce accounts you have access to. If you have access to more than one — for example, several companies, or both an employer and an employee login — it will ask which one you want to use. To switch, just tell it, e.g. *"Switch to Acme Pty Ltd."*

Using names.

You can refer to employees and companies by name. Your AI assistant will look them up for you.

Dates.

You can use relative dates like "last week" or "this pay period". If the answer covers an unexpected period, ask your assistant which dates it used.

Check important figures.

AI assistants can make mistakes. Before acting on any pay amounts, leave balances or other important figures, confirm them in the PaySauce app.

Privacy and security

  • Same access as the app. Your AI assistant signs in as you and can only see information you can already see in PaySauce.

  • Read-only. The connection can't change any of your PaySauce data.

  • Your AI provider receives the data you ask about. When your assistant looks up payroll information, that information - which may include employees' personal details and pay - is sent to your AI provider so it can answer you. Check that this is allowed under your organisation's privacy policy and your AI provider's data terms before connecting.

  • Disconnecting. To stop your AI assistant accessing PaySauce, remove or disconnect the PaySauce connector in your AI assistant's settings.

Troubleshooting

I'm asked to sign in again and again, or sign-in fails with an error.

Make sure you're signing in with the same login you use for the PaySauce app. If you're adding PaySauce manually (Option 2) and see an error mentioning a redirect URI or an invalid client, your AI assistant may not be supported yet - please contact PaySauce support and let us know which assistant you're using.

My AI assistant says it can't find an employee or company I know exists.

It may be using the wrong account. Ask it which PaySauce account it's using, and switch to the right one.

My AI assistant says it can't submit my timesheet / approve leave / run the pay.

That's expected - the connection is read-only. Use the PaySauce app to make changes.

I get a message saying "SSE transport not supported".

Your AI assistant is trying to connect using the older SSE transport. Change the connection type to **HTTP** (Streamable HTTP).

Something else isn't working.

Contact PaySauce support. It helps to tell us which AI assistant you're using and the exact error message you see.
